Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 LB ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion diced
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced (I use garlic from the jar)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2- 1 cup water start with 1/2 cup and more as needed if too thick

Instructions

  • Crumble and brown the ground beef in a dutch oven, or large saucepan, over a medium heat. Drain the grease.
  • Add the onion, green peppers, garlic, chili powder, dry mustard, pepper flakes, black pepper, salt, and brown sugar. Stir to combine well. Simmer over a low heat 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Whisk together the worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and 1/2 cup water. Stir into the meat mixture, and simmer on low for 15-20 minutes. Cook uncoverered and stir frequently. If mixture seems too thick, add more water, small amount at a time.

Notes

**If your family does not like spicy heat, add less of the red pepper flakes, like 1/4 teaspoon. My husband always wants more.
