West Virginia Reunion Beans are made with spicy sausage, a mixture of beans, and veggies and are slow simmered for hours in a crockpot to create this delicious side dish.

This recipe seems to be in every church cookbook in West Virginia, and each one has a little variety in the ingredients. Some people use ground beef, others use sausage, and many add sliced kielbasa.

My mother made these beans often when I was growing up. She always served them with fried potatoes and cornbread.

My husband fixes a crockpot full of these beans every year at his deer camp. It is an easy recipe for him to dump everything in a crockpot, stir, and simmer until time to eat.

This recipe serves a lot of people, so it is perfect to take to a cook-out or BBQ.  People say that it reminds them of Calico Beans or Cowboy Beans.

HOW TO MAKE WEST VIRGINIA REUNION BEANS:

INGREDIENTS:
Spicy Ground Sausage
Turkey Sausage or Kielbasa
Butter Beans
Chili Beans
Pork and Beans
Lima Beans
Kidney Beans
Navy Beans
Diced Tomatoes
Ketchup
Onion
Salt & Pepper
Garlic Salt
Green Bell Pepper
Brown Sugar

INSTRUCTIONS:

Assemble and prepare the ingredients.
Crumble and brown the sausage, drain grease. Slice kielbasa. Chop the vegetables, measure ketchup.


Spray the inside of a crockpot with no stick cooking spray.
Place the sausage, kielbasa, beans, seasonings, and tomatoes in the crockpot.

Add the brown sugar, onions, ketchup, and green peppers. Stir all of the ingredients together until well combined.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound spicy sausage
  • 1 link (6-8 oz) kielbasa (or turkey sausage)
  • 1 can (16oz) butter beans, drained
  • 1 can (16oz) chili beans, undrained
  • 1 can (16oz) pork and beans, undrained
  • 1 can (15.25oz) lima beans, drained
  • 1 can (16oz) kidney beans, drained
  • 1 can (16oz) navy beans, drained
  • 1 can (14.5oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped

Instructions

  • Assemble the ingredients. Crumble and brown the sausage in a medium size skillet; drain grease and set aside.
  • Cut the kielbasa (or turkey sausage) at a diagonal into 1-inch pieces. Set aside.
  • Chop the onions and green bell pepper. Measure the ketchup and the brown sugar.
  • Spray the inside of a 6 or 7-quart crockpot with no stick cooking spray.
  • Place the sausage and kielbasa in crockpot. Dump the cans of beans, seasonings, and tomatoes into the crockpot.
  • Add the brown sugar, onions, ketchup, and green peppers. Stir all of the ingredients together until well combined.
  • Cook on low, uncovered, for 5 hours. Stir the bean mixture occasionally.
  • Serve warm from the crockpot as a side or add cornbread and serve as a meal.
