They are sold at the concession stand at every sporting event around. We also serve them at parties, cook-outs, tailgate parties and school events. I have also set up a table and served them when children came to play at our house.

A few weeks ago, I hosted a 70th birthday party for my husband and these are one of the foods I served. I set up a Taco in a Bag station. It was a big hit with both kids and adults. I prepared 10 pounds of taco meat for this food station.

I always have the ingredients on hand to make these if my grandchildren are coming over after school. It is their favorite snack.

I purchased this box of Dorito bags at Sam’s Club. They are also available on Amazon.

Some other foods we love to eat here in WV and serve at gatherings are PEPPERONI ROLLS, HOMEMADE HOT DOG SAUCE, and
PULLED PORK SLIDERS.

Helpful Tips and Frequently Asked Questions

Can these be prepared in advance?
YES.. prep each ingredient separate and place in individual containers.  The meat can be cooked ahead of time and warmed up when serving the tacos in a bag.

Store the leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Can I use my homemade taco seasoning instead of a packet?
YES.. I have done this sometimes. Use 2 Tablespoons per 1 pound of meat.

  • When cooking the meat, crumble it very small so that it will fit better into the bags.
  • If there will be several small children, you can cut the tops off of the bags ahead of time to make it easier for them.
  • Slightly crush the bags of chips before filling them to make them easier to eat.
  • Start filling the bag with the meat, then the cheese so that it will melt slightly. Then continue to add the toppings, ending with the salsa and sour cream.
  • Use Doritos, Nachos, Fritos, or Cool Ranch Doritos. These are the common ones in our area, there may be other kinds of chips available in other areas.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (1oz) packet taco seasoning mix (mild or spicy) (or 2 Tablespoons of homemade)
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 6 (1oz) size bags of Doritos (may use the larger ones if preferred)
  • 1 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped or shredded lettuce
  • 1/4 cup onions, diced (optional)
  • 1/4 cup jalapeno slices
  • 1/2 cup fresh tomatoes, diced
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup queso cheese, warm (optional)
  • 1-1 1/2 cups sour cream (*best to just use the squeeze bag)

Instructions

  • In a large skillet or small Dutch oven, crumble and brown the ground beef.  Drain the grease. Crumble the beef into small pieces to fit into the bags easier.
  • Stir in the taco seasoning mix and the water. Cover pan and simmer about 20 minutes, stirring frequently.
  • Arrange all of the ingredients in small bowls and set on a tray or table to serve,
If desired, transfer the meat to a small slow cooker and set it on warm.
  • Gently crush the chips in the bag. Cut the tops off. To fill the taco bags, begin with the meat since it is the heaviest. Add the cheese next so it can melt a little with the warm meat. After that the ingredients can be added in any order. End with the salsa and then the sour cream on top.
  • Set out forks to eat them with.

NOTES:
  • When cooking the meat, crumble it very small so that it will fit better into the bags.
  • It is much better to use the squeeze sour cream instead of spooning it out, if you can get it.
  • If I can find the small bags of chips in different flavors, I set up a basket with the variety ones.
